Witch hazel was a traditional remedy of many Native American peoples. They used poultices soaked in decoction of the bark to treat tumors and inflammations, especially in the eyes, and took the herb internally for hemorrhaging and heavy menstrual bleeding.
As an eyewash in acute opthalmia.
As a mouthwash for sore gums.
Acute pharyngitis with hyperemia.
Chronic pharyngitis with pale, relaxed mucosa.
Chronic sinusitis with nasal catarrh, thickened relaxed mucosa (also as a gargle).
Passive capillary hemorrhage.
Varicose veins with relaxed tissues, sense of fullness; venous stasis in turgid veins, not from cardiac decompensation or portal hypertension.
Hemorrhoids, painful, extruding, with sense of fullness, weight, congestion.
Abrasions with bruises and dermal irritations (topical).
Leukorrhea, viscous, fetid (as douche, with Hydrastis).
